Vitality Big Half 2022, road closures in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey

The Vitality Big Half will take place on Sunday 4 September 2022. Some essential road closures that may affect your location are required as part of The Vitality Big Half route, when thousands of runners will pass through Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe / Road Closure Information

Tower Bridge Road and Tower Bridge will close at 04:00 from the junction of Tooley Street. Tooley Street will remain open until 06:00.
Jamaica Road will be completely closed in both directions. There are four vehicle crossing points in this area, which will allow residents to enter and exit until the times stated

  • Shad Thames and Mill Street
  • Closed for runners from 08:35 to 13:10

Residents of the Shad Thames, Mill Street and Dockhead area can enter and exit via Dockhead until 08:35 and after 13:10.

These two vehicle crossing points will allow residents access to Tanner Street westbound.

To gain access to this area, please approach via Abbey Street northbound where stewards will be present to direct residents onto Jamaica Road in a westbound direction

  • Bevington Street
  • Closed for runners from 08:35 to 13:10

Residents are able to use the vehicle crossing point until 08:35 and after 13:10 for access to and from St Jamesโ€™s Road

  • West Lane
  • Closed for runners from 08:35 to 13:10

Residents of the West Lane area will be permitted access directly over the event route, and able to access Southwark Park Road southbound. The usual left turn only arrangement at this junction will not be in use throughout the event and stewards will assist the movement of vehicles here.

Roads will close in this area from 06:00 and are due to reopen at 15:00. Access to the peninsula, shopping area and public transport are available on the event day.

Access to the peninsula is available via Surrey Quays Road and Needleman Street for those residents to the north, and via Lower Road and Neptune Street for residents to the south west of the peninsula.

The tunnel will be open throughout the event. Please check the height and width restrictions before travelling.

Lower Road will be open from Jamaica Road to Surrey Quays, providing local access to the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

To assist landlocked residents, there are three vehicle crossing points available on the Rotherhithe Peninsula, which will operate during speci c times of the day. Please see the main booklet for further details: thebighalf.co.uk/road-closures

  • Lower Road via Plough Way to Rotherhithe New Road
  • Closed for runners from 08:45 to 14:05

Access to Plough Way while the vehicle crossing point is in operation is available from Bush Road. Our stewards will facilitate traffic against the usual one-way traffic system to enable access to and from Plough Way.


Free secure parking

Secure parking is available for residents of Rotherhithe from 16:00 on Saturday 21 August until 17:00 on Sunday 22 August at Bacon’s College, Timber Pond Road, SE16 6AT.

To use this car park, please provide proof of address โ€“ such as a letter, bank statement or utility bill โ€“ to stewards at the car park. A limited number of spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.

Parking Restrictions

If you have a vehicle, please move it from the event route on Saturday. All parking bays on the route will be suspended and vehicle removal will commence from 04:00 on Sunday 4 September.
