So what’s Ugly Duck?
Ugly Duck revitalises underused space. We find empty and underused spaces and open them up for a range of creative uses. We run projects which animate and connect people to public spaces.
In 2012, we opened our first project space, 47/49 Tanner Street, unlocking an empty 19th century warehouse in Bermondsey for a wide range of creative activities. We now also manage activities at The Testing Works, and in Autumn 2016 will take on our biggest project to date.
SPACE
We believe that space – especially in overcrowded cities like London – should never be left empty. We take vacant and disused buildings and bring them back into creative use; reflecting communities and histories, investigating social issues through arts and enterprise.
We are currently building our portfolio of spaces to further develop our public and commercial programmes. These buildings could be big or small, temporary or permanent. Get in touch if you know of a space that needs a new lease of life.
PEOPLE
We are committed to producing work that directly engages its audience in new and dynamic ways. We are interested in how the arts can grow and flourish in our changing world, breaking down barriers and reaching out to broader audiences with unique live experiences.
We start conversations, brokers relationships, and seeks increased opportunities for emerging artists and thinkers. Collaboration plays a central role in our work, as we believe working and developing together leads to more inclusive and ambitious plans. We work with a growing network of artists through our time bank, enabling people to meet their needs in more collaborative participative ways.
IDEAS
We believe that the arts can respond to the challenges of today, exploring different perspectives and approaches, and re-imagining our shared future. Ugly Duck supports ideas that challenge the status quo, get at the heart of a matter, advocate for grassroots change, or engage spectators in a new way. Surprise us.
