Joyful June Social Tea Dance

Hear the joyful sound of music being created by more than 100 children from primary schools across London at a concert with Music Action International.

Inspired by music from Syrian, Roma, Mozambican and other refugee cultures, children write and perform songs together in Music Action Internationalโ€™s schools programme, Harmonise.

Through Harmonise, refugee and local children have fun, make friends, gain confidence and create music in different languages together, while learning about who refugees really are from professional musicians who are themselves refugees.

Full Circle

Sunday 23 June 2019| 1 pm |Royal Festival Hall, The Clore Room , Level 2

An award-winning community opera project inspired by the real-life story of a Newham resident who arrived as a young refugee.

He shared his story with hundreds of young people from 15 schools in the London borough of Newham at creative workshops, where the young people created five original songs reflecting the modern-day struggles of finding your way.

Rapper and spoken word artist Mohammed Yahya and poet Laila Sumpton have also worked with children across Newham to explore themes of refugee journeys, gang violence, and place-making to create a new narrations for the event.

Full Circle features more than 200 children and young people from the borough and is part of Refugee Week 2019.

Full Circle is a collaboration between Newham Music, Music For Youth, Lister Community School and Counterpoints Arts.

The project recently received the Music Teacher Award for Excellence in the Outstanding Musical Initiative Category.

You, Me and Those Who Came Before Me

Investigate your ancestry and help create a wall of family portraits at an open drawing workshop for all ages.

If we look, we will discover experiences of displacement in our families, among our friends and in our neighbourhoods.

This Refugee Week, you are invited to join us in exploring the lives of refugees, and those who have welcomed them here, throughout the generations.

Singing Our Lives

Hundreds of singers and instrumentalists from refugee, migrant and local UK backgrounds compose and perform new music together.

Join us as voices unite in song and solidarity to celebrate Refugee Week 2019.

An afternoon of singing includes opportunities for the audience to take part, as well as performances from choirs and groups of a huge range of music from around the world.

Performers include Mixed Up Chorus, Sing for Freedom Choir, Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus, Islington Refugee Choir, Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, Mind & Soul Choir and special guests.

As Far as Isolation Goes

What does it feel like to be a refugee? Find out at an interactive installation by artists Tania El Khoury and Basel Zaraa.

Be guided through the emotional and mental health hardships faced by people in detention centres through painting, touch and sound.

Tania El Khoury is a live artist who creates installations and performances focused on audience interactivity and concerned with the ethical and political potential of such encounters.

Her work has been translated and presented in multiple languages and across six continents, in spaces ranging from museums to cable cars to the Mediterranean Sea.

Basel Zaraa is a spoken-word artist, visual and stencil graffiti artist, and percussionist, whose work explores themes of exile and resistance.

He performs original music and DIY sound effects for PsycheDELIGHTโ€™s Borderline, a satire about the Calais camp. He is currently touring with Tania El Khouryโ€™s As Far As My Fingertips Take Me



Balkan and Roma Sounds

Get footloose at a free early evening party of Balkan and Roma sounds, featuring musicians and rappers from Counterpoints Arts-run projects.
