Celebrate U.Dance 20 and 21 July 2019
Rising stars of dance from across the UK take to our stages over one weekend this summer, as U.Dance returns to Southbank Centre with their national annual youth dance festival.
South Asian dancers battle it out in the NAVADAL competition, the choreographers of tomorrow present imaginative new works in Young Creatives and free performances pop up in Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer.
Tap into the rhythm at thrilling showcases from dance groups, selected from hundreds of entrants nationwide, that encompass contemporary, hip-hop and South Asian dance.
With so many styles to choose from, not only can you enjoy performances but can also take the floor yourself in free U.Dance workshops.
The Batty Mama

Unwind to old-school summer anthems at the QTIPOC (queer, trans and intersex people of colour) south London collective’s DJ residency.
Over three Thursday evenings in July, come down for a sexy and carefree vibe and hear all the classics from the 1990s onwards at sets bursting with R&B, hip-hop, garage, Afrobeats, bashment and funky house.
The Batty Mama is a down and dirty, open and enticing dystopic space for queer and trans bodies and Black and Brown, queer, QTIPOC and LGBTQI+ identifying people.

The Raze Collective

Dance the night away at a showcase of the best in queer (LGBTQI+) culture, featuring dance and music.
The Raze Collective presents a diverse line-up of acoustic performers, singer-songwriters, electronic artists, dancers and DJs showcasing the most exciting musicians around today.
A charity that supports, develops and nurtures queer performance in the UK, The Raze Collective was established in response to the closure of many long-standing queer venues.
By bringing together people from different aspects of the queer performance community, including performers, producers, promoters, directors, venue owners, academics and audience members, the charity hopes to protect and promote queer performance for everyone.

U.Dance: Navadal Competiton
Saturday 20 July 2019 | 11 am |Royal Festival Hall, The Clore Ballroom, Level 2
The rising stars of South Asian dance battle it out for a spot in the Akademi showcase in front of a panel of judges โ and you.
The young dancers compete in four distinct categories: solo and group dances for ages 13 โ 18 and 19 โ 25.
The winners of the competition have the chance to perform in the NAVADAL Rising Stars showcase following this event.
NAVADAL, meaning โnew shootsโ in Hindi, is Akademiโs biennial national South Asian youth dance competition, presented in partnership with Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) Yuva Gati.

Pxssy Palace

From the forefront of the party revolution, the collective presents a QTIPOC (queer, trans and intersex people of colour) showcase.
Pxssy Palace, known for promoting a safe space culture at their club nights, events and festivals, take over our Riverside Terrace for an electric and dynamic evening of music, art and performance.
The collective of DJs, educators and performers provides tools for marginalised groups and wider society through educational workshops and curation, centred on queer and trans people of colour.

U.Dance: Pop-up Performances

Delight in dance as young dancers from across London and the surrounding areas showcase their talents over two free afternoon performances.
Dancers perform a range of dance styles, demonstrating the variety of talent and creativity of the next generation of dancers.

U.Dance: Youth Dance Ceilidh

Reel, jig and morris around our site at a day of free workshops and performances with the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
Caller Ben Moss and live musicians guide you and your whole family through the moves to the liveliest ceilidh dances โ no experience needed.
Throughout the ceilidh, see an array of genres performed by groups of talented young dancers, including Foolโs Gambit Morris and London Youth Folk Ensemble.
As well as the Ceilidh, look out for processions along the riverside featuring some of Englandโs finest young folk dancers and musicians.

U.Dance: Jazz Jam

Youโve got rhythm โ tap into it at a workshop exploring the links between jazz music and dance with Tomorrow’s Warriors, our resident youth jazz company.
Watch demonstrations from dance experts in an interactive session and explore how jazz and tap dance share the historical and rhythmic roots of jazz music.
Working with the experts, together you can draw inspiration from the live music and discover your own beats and moves.
