Shine Night Walk is Cancer Research UK’s night-time walking marathon, that brings over 15,000 people from across the UK together to light up London and raise over for ยฃ4 million for life-saving research. For more information please do go to www.shinewalk.org
The route of the Marathon will have a start point in Southwark Park and it will end at Old Billingsgate
Southwark Park Access
Southwark Park will be the start venue for the event– the park will be still open to the public during normal park open hours throughout the duration of the event on-site. However, there will be some restrictions:
- The sports pitches area will be cordoned off Friday 23rd September until the evening of Sunday 25th September
- Access to the outdoor gym will not be affected
- Car parking will not be available in Hawkstone Car Park , or the internal road within Jamaica Gate, between Friday 23rd- Sunday 25th September
- Christchurch Gate, Paradise Gate, Dilston Grove Gate and Moreton Terrace Gate will be closed from 6pm on Saturday 24th September
- Jamaica Gate, Gomm Road and China Hall Gates will all remain open during normal park open hours
Southwark Park Live Event
During the event on Saturday 24th from 6pm, Southwark Park will be illuminated using the existing floodlights , and additional lighting, music and commentary will be used until approximately 11pm. The organisers will be working closely with Southwark Council’s Environmental Protection Team on the night to monitor the sound levels.
Surrounding areas
People will be arriving from approximately 5.30pm onwards. Although we expect over 15,000 to take part, their arrival will be staggered over the course of the evening.
Participants have been advised to use public transport, in particular Canada Water and Surrey Quays Stations., and these stations and surrounding areas are likely to be busy. Participants have been advised not to drive, and asked not to park in local residential areas. Anyone who does arrive by car has been advised to be dropped off at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.
Participant will be directed to enter the park through China Hall Gate. Stewards will be present on Gomm Road for crowd control and to restrict any event parking.
Road Closures and Parking Bay Suspensions
The local roads around Southwark Park will be significantly busier than normal, os in order to avoid congestion, please avoid driving in the area wherever possible.

JAMAICA ROAD
- The westbound bus lane (between Southwark Park’s Christchurch Gate and St James’s Road) will be closed on Saturday 24th September. There will be no access to Jamaica Road from/to Southwark Park Road, Drummond Road and Keetons Road during this time
- The bus lane closure will be installed from 7pm
- All parking/loading bays within the bus lane closure will be suspended from 6pm on Saturday 24th September
- The bus lane closure will be in place until approximately 1am on Sunday 25th September
- Buses using Jamaica Road will be unaffected although some bus stops may be temporarily moved

DRUID STREET
- A lane closure will be in place along Druid St between Abbey Street and Tanner Street. This will also be installed from 7pm. Access to/from Arnold Estate and Sweeney Crescent will be kept open, but the organisers would politely request that people in the area refrain from driving in this area wherever possible.
- If you do need to drive in the area, please do take great care and follow the instructions of the stewards who are there to ensure everyone’s safety. Please be aware that traffic flow is likely to be very slow during the event
- For safety reasons all the parking bays on Druid St between Abbey Street and Tanner Street will be suspended, so please do not park in these bays
