Tuesday Cinema Club: The Petrified Forest
Tuesday 30 July| 8.30pm |Films of 1936 season| The Petrified Forest |Archie Mayo| 1936| Free, booking required
The Petrified Forest, based on Robert E. Sherwoodโs 1935 play, seems to be (apart from the usual assistant directors) entirely Mayoโs own. Most famous, perhaps, for bringing to Humphrey Bogart his first draught of film prominence,ย The Petrified Forestย is in fact quiet and tender and extraordinarily evocative of the loose-ended lives that the Great Depression wrought. It is a very fine film about a waitress, a hobo and a bank robber whoย get mixed up at a lonely diner in the desert.
