Brilliant and very surprising soviet comedy by Abram Room. A kind of “Jules et Jim” set in 1927 Moscow the film was controversial at the time of release in the Soviet Union because of its focus on human relationships, while the state and the party are almost completely disregarded. In fact, at one point one of the characters even declines to go to a Party meeting. However, the film’s resolution is clear and reflects on a real revolution taking place in Russian traditional family roles stereotypes. The film gives a rare vision of Moscow life before Stalin.
