Taking place in the beautiful Southwark Park, Bermondsey Carnival 2019 is an exciting free programme of music, dance and creativity organised in partnership with Bermondsey Beat The day includes a live music programme headlined by The Real Thing, childrenโ€™s workshops, a funfair, world foods stalls and Rumble in the Jumble

A traditional funfair, delicious world foods, fun activities from community partners, a family zone and childrenโ€™s dance tent – there will be plenty of activities and performances to entertain the whole family.

Alongside Bermondsey Beatโ€™s fantastic array of live acts on the Bandstand, there is so much more to do for all the family.

Create and Play Zone

The free family and childrenโ€™s area to get creative and learn something new with workshops and activities from community partners such as London Bubble Theatre, South London Gallery and the Movement Factory.ย  Look out for special 150th birthday themed activities, and help to wish the park a big happy birthday!

The Movement Factory Stage โ€“ Back by popular demand, the dedicated dance tent run by award winning Southwark based dance collective The Movement Factory will be running an action packed day of dance workshops and performances for all ages and abilities.ย  There will also be lots of special guest appearances – not to mention prizes to be won throughout the day!ย 

Zoom Zoom Zoom! โ€“ Non-stop storytelling for under-fives, parents and carers with Southwarkโ€™s Libraries team. Plus come and check out the winners of the Festival of Wordโ€™s poster competition themed on Southwark Parkโ€™s 150th Birthday.

Marawaโ€™s Majorettes โ€“ Fall in love with hooping with Marawa’s extraordinary award-winning hula-hooping troup, who will be running workshops and performances throughout the day.  Check workshop and performance times at the Create and Play area or information points.

Birthday card making with Bizzie Bodies โ€“ make a beautiful birthday card for the park, which you can take away with you or leave in the park to decorate the Create and Play area.

Party hat making with Time and Talents โ€“ Fizzy family fun making decorated party hats to add that extra festive feel to your outfit.  Once youโ€™ve made your hat, you can also get creative making Crafty Beasts in the park using a range of craft materials.

Free face painting โ€“ add some sparkle to your visit with our team of face painters. Come along for rainbows, tigers, or just heaps of glitter and glitz. Let your imagination run wild!

Meet Tootles and Nibs โ€“ can you spot Tootles and Nibs, the neon safari explorers with their bag full of tricks, games and challenges suitable for all ages?  Theyโ€™re hard to miss!

Kids Dig It โ€“ Come and have a go at being a real archaeologist with Southwarkโ€™s Heritage team.  Find buried artefacts, identify what they are and discover more about the ancient stuff thatโ€™s under Southwarkโ€™s streets.

Charting the Mayflower – The Deal โ€“ Join London Bubble Theatre for a promenade performance exploring what life was like for those who were involved in preparing for the Mayflower to depart on her maiden voyage to the Americas.  You will be taken on a journey back in time with storytelling, singing, music and dancing!  Check performance times at the Create and Play area or information points.

Zine-making workshop with Museum of Youth Culture โ€“ Make a zine using photographs from the museumโ€™s youth and subculture archive to imagine what youth culture is going to look like in the future. Donโ€™t forget to bring your own photos along to include in your zine! Do you have photographs of your youth? The museum would love to see your photographs to help tell the story of growing up. Bring your photographs along to the carnival and they will scan it for you to add to their collection while you wait.

The Bermondsey Carnival will have the Rumble in the Jumble, its very own mass jumble sale where you might be lucky enough to find a hidden treasure and Reuben Bonds Victorian Fun Fair with all sorts of rides and games to keep you busy throughout the day.

There will be plenty of street food and drinks outlets to choose from and community organisations and local businesses will have a stall in the park.

The Real Thing

Dominated the charts in the 1970โ€™s and gave the world timeless soul classics; โ€˜You To Me Are Everythingโ€™, โ€˜Canโ€™t Get By Without Youโ€™ and โ€˜Can You Feel the Forceโ€™ singles that sold over a million copies each. In the 80s, dance remixes of their songs became huge hits again, confirming the bands status as true pioneers of the UK soul sound.

Deliver a funky, passionate and energetic show that keeps them in enormous demand with sold out tours and acclaimed performances at 70โ€™s and 80โ€™s festivals. After the sad death of Eddy Amoo, in 2016, Chris Amoo and Dave Smith carry the torch supported by their fantastic 5-piece band, playing all the smash hits.

Long time stalwarts of the UK Reggae movement, Indika band have โ€˜backed upโ€™ a whoโ€™s who of legendary Reggae artists. Now they have teamed up with Leroy Jones โ€“ Britain number one Gregory Issacs tribute to bring all the great manโ€™s hits. Special guest Fredericka Tibbs debuts her new EP release.

To get it all rolling there will be special performance by Januka Quadrille Dancers.

Getting there

Bermondsey Carnival takes place in Southwark Park around the bandstand, in the north area of the park. It is a combination of large expanses of grass with tarmac paths. There are sheltered areas (marquees) and non-sheltered areas. Weather and ground conditions may be variable.

There is very little parking around the park and we suggest that visitors make use of the brilliant public transport around the park.

Distances from main transport hubs are as follows:

Underground Bermondsey 0.3 miles Canada Water 0.5 miles

Overground Canada Water 0.5 miles | Surrey Quays 0.6 miles

Bus Bus stops nearby: 1, 47, 188, 255, 381, C10, P12. The Canada Water bus terminal in only 0.5 miles

Train South Bermondsey station 1.7 miles

Bike Bike parking is available at the event

Disabled Access

Disabled badge parking and a drop-off/pick-up point for disabled people is available on site via the entrance on Southwark Park Road.
