About IPF
The Independent Photography Festival (IPF) is an annual, multi-city celebration of photography, its application and practice. This is our website.
Initiated in Melbourne by Hard Workers Club, Smalltime Projects and The Good Copy in 2012, and hosted by some of Melbourneโs best small galleries and project spaces, IPF set out to offer a new platform for autonomous photographers and photo enthusiasts, both emerging and established.
Five years after inception, with the help of co-presenters Palm* Studios & The Heavy Collective,ย IPF made the leap across waters in 2015 and, as we approach IPF 2017 in May, weโre five annual programmes deep. Weโve hosted 50+ events in five cities across three continents, and have exhibited, presented and collaborated with more than 500 photographers worldwide.
Ever-changing and always evolving, weโre here to take space and make space for conversations about human engagement, artistic development, and community support.
While weโre eternally grateful to The Internet for the infinite platform it gives us to connect and collaborate, we feel that for too long our analogue, manual and physical practice has been confined to blogs, tumblrs and dedicated websites. IPF is an effort to bring together the living, breathing artists, creatives and bodies who make up our varied, but nowadays very screen-based discipline.
The aim of every IPF program is to introduce hard-working, autonomous, passionate, and progressive photographers who are creating for the love of shooting and shooting for the love of creating.
IPF is made possible by a great many less-acknowledged but much-loved helping hands.
IPF Melbourne takes place on what always was and always will be the land of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin nation. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We understand that the sovereignty of Aboriginal people has never been ceded.
